Our Favorite YouTube Med Content

Just like all of you, we love watching videos online in our free time. But who says we can’t also learn something at the same time? That’s why we’ve put together this list, specially crafted for those of you who might be looking for some videos that are geared towards medicine. Read through our descriptions for each to see how they can enrich your journey as a pre-med and beyond!

What we love about Dr. Mike is his approach to talking about health. From his fun reaction videos to his discussions of various medical concepts, there’s always something important that you can take away from his videos, all the while comprehending everything entirely. For example, watching Dr. Mike often provides us with easy-to-understand explanations of anatomical terminology or biological processes, as well as a look into how they are used or play out in a variety of situations. As a DO, he embodies the holistic medical philosophy, too. Even as prospective MDs, watching his videos is alway serves as an important reminder of just how involved caring for people’s health should be. It’s clear that he truly sees health as multidimensional—and we couldn’t be more excited to learn how he puts it into practice. But he also reminds us that illnesses don’t happen to single patients. Whether he’s doing a grocery haul or a more serious discussion on the implications of socially relevant topics, he’s always one of our inspirations to show you all how health extends past single patients and ripples throughout our world, especially with his podcast, The Checkup! By watching Dr. Mike’s videos, we feel that we’re both setting ourselves up tailor our care to every patient we’ll help, and that we’re able to become a part of the sociomedical world and its interconnected aspects and developments—all before even becoming doctors ourselves!

If you look up “What it’s like to be a [insert any medical specialty]” on YouTube, we’d be willing to bet that one of the top results would come from Med School Insiders’ “So You Want to Be” series. That’s because, through Med School Insiders, Dr. Kevin Jubbal and his team have built one of the most informative channels offering pre-med and med school advice on YouTube. As their channel name suggests, they take the experiences of real physicians to give us an in-depth look at what it’s like to be a doctor. Their many videos cover everything from: tips and tricks for med school applications; to strategies and ideas for extracurriculars as a pre-med; to study methods geared towards the information-heavy pre-med and medical paths; to, of course, explorations of various subspecialties within medicine (and not just surgery, for all of you not interested in it!); and much more. They also have a website that you can visit for consulting and tutoring services, or written versions of the content up on their YouTube channel if reading is your preferred method of content consumption. Overall, though, to us, Med School Insiders is one of the best resources out there to plan your route through medicine!

ND MD is one of our favorite channels on YouTube for videos that openly and honestly discuss what we can expect throughout med school and as physicians. For instance, there are many interesting nuances that, as only pre-meds, we can’t even imagine exist. Thankfully, though, his discussion-style videos and Beyond the Scope podcast help cover them and invite us to become part of these hidden—but important!—points of the medical world. You also know Vogue‘s 73 Questions series? Take that concept and apply it to medicine—that’s exactly what one of ND MD’s most popular set of videos did. He’s interviewed physicians specializing in cardiothoracic surgery, to neurosurgery, to even hematology. These physicians open up and give students like ourselves the guidance that they’ve found useful through years of experience with the medical path. As a plus, too, there are some episodes where he talks with students, providing some insight on becoming a physician. But regardless of the video, we’ve always found ND MD to feature an invaluable candidness that’s hard to come by anywhere else on YouTube, and the varied perspectives that he hosts create a unique landscape of ideas and viewpoints that uncover much more from medicine than any single voice could on its own!
